Lewis Baldwin enlisted in Albany, New York on 8 August 1861 in the 44th New York Volunteer Infantry. The nickname for it was "Ellsworth Avengers". The 44th had high standards to even consider one to be in it. Had to be 5 feet 9 inches tall, single and of high moral values.

He enlisted for 3 years and was placed in Company D on 30 August 1861.

At the Battle of Hanover Court House on 26 May, 1862 he was severely wounded. Transported to New York City where he died of his wounds at City Hospital.
