Kenneth L. Baker, 78, Topeka, passed away on Thursday, September 23, 2010 at Stormont Vail Regional Health Center. Ken was born November 30, 1931 in Longford, the only child of Charles and Blanche Baker. He grew up in Abilene. He graduated from Abilene High School in 1949. The next year, he enrolled at the University of Kansas. After one year, he transferred to the Menninger Foundation School for Psychiatric Aides in Topeka. After graduation, he worked briefly at the Topeka State Hospital. He was soon drafted into the U.S. Army Medical Corps in 1952 during the Korean War. After his tour of duty he returned to the University of Kansas. He eventually completed both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Clinical Psychology.
Ken went to work for the State of Kansas in Juvenile Corrections at the Boy's Industrial School/Youth Center at Topeka for the next 38 years, retiring in February of 1994. In 1993, he began working as a Clinician for the Shawnee Community Mental Health Center/Valeo Behavioral Health Center, where he was currently employed.
In 1953, Ken married Rita Thoke from Manitowoc, WI. They enjoyed Square dancing, bowling, camping, boating, fishing and travelling in their RV.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Betsy Baker and Martha Hess, all of Topeka; grandsons, Cody (Sarah) Hess, Topeka and Tanner French, Peoria, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Ken was a charter member (1961) of the Sunrise Optimist Club of North Topeka. During the early years, he served as Secretary-Treasurer of the club for 18 years.
Cremation has taken place and private memorial services will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Valeo Behavioral Health Care, 330 SW Oakley, Topeka, Kansas 66606.
