Effa Bernace Ballew was born on December 9, 1914 in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois to William Ballew (1875-?) and Maude Hamilton (1882-?. She usually went by the name 'Bernice.
In 1944 she married Joseph Patrick Haggerty (1909-2000) while he was in the Army Air Corps stationed in North Dakota. They had one son, William (b. 1945). They divorced in the early 1950s.
Bernice later married Walter Donahue around 1964 in Los Angeles.
Bernice died on February 19, 2005 and was buried in Palos Verdes, CA. She is survived by her son, grand-daughter and four great grand-children.
