Hughes Smith, 96, of Morton, Texas, died Wednesday, Sep. 22, 2010 at the Muleshoe Nursing Home.
Hughes Smith, a longtime resident and farmer in Morton, was a member of the First Baptist Church. He was born June 1, 1914 in Ryan, Okla. He married Virginia Louise Miller of McAdoo, Texas, on May 7, 1932 in Dickens, Texas. He served in the Navy in World War II and settled in Morton, where he farmed until his retirement at 75 years of age. Hughes, when not farming, enjoyed trips to lakes with family or friends.
Hughes was preceded in death by his parents, Egbert and Ellie Hughes Smith; and brothers, Leslie, Lois, Roland, and Lowell Smith.
Survivors include his loving wife, Virginia Louise; a son and two daughters, Donald H. Smith and wife, Donna, of Houston, Texas, Mary Ann Lackey and husband, Kirby, of Morton and Katie Smith Galvin of Morton; nine grandchildren, Lynda Bryant-Work, Mark Thoms, Shannon Rosas, Suzanne Hall, Sarah Martinez, Donald Smith, Jr.,
Jeffery Smith, Gordon Smith and Lisa Smith; 19 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Una Smith Harris of Ryan, Okla.
