Elias served in Company F of the 100th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He suffered a gun shot wound to the right shoulder. Following the war, he returned to Ohio where he operated a store and taught school. He would receive a pension of $8.00 a month for his injury.

Elias traveled by covered wagon to Russell County, Kansas to homestead south of what is now Bunker Hill in Fairfield Township on 160 acres in the North East corner of Section 13 in Township 10, Range 15 along Goose Creek.

He taught at the District 55 school which was known as the Trapp School. He also taught Sunday school.
