Helen M. (Sather) Hanson, 92, of Fertile, MN passed away on Tuesday, August 10, 2004, at the Riverview Hospital, Crookston, MN. Helen Margaret Sather was born February 17,1912, in Crookston, MN, to Louis and Mary (Anderson) Sather. She was baptized and confirmed in the English Lutheran Church of Crookston, and attended Crookston public schools, graduating in 1930.

Following graduation from Bemidji State Teachers College, she taught the first four grades at the Red Lake Indian Reservation School. After working at the Polk County Courthouse for two years, she joined the elementary teaching staff in Fertile, MN, and taught first grade there for five years. In 1941, she was united in marriage to David E. Hanson in Crookston, MN. They made their home in Fertile. She worked five years at the First State Bank of Fertile.

Helen Hanson had a lifelong interest in music. She played piano for many high school and college events, and for services at the English Lutheran Church in Crookston. She was selected as a member of the music honor society at Bemidji State Teachers College. She had an active interest in the Crookston Artist Series for many years, and was an active member of the Band Mothers Club when her sons were in school.

She participated in many community activities including: Fertile League of Women Voters, the Women's Study Club, Concordia Lutheran Church circles, and other church activities. She also took great interest in the activities of her husband and sons, and enjoyed entertaining family and friends both in her home and at the family's cottage at Union Lake.

Helen M. Hanson is survived by her son, Ronald D. Hanson, Fertile; a grandson, Blake Ronald Hanson; nephews, Louis (Carol) Sather, Madison, WI; David (Joy) Sather, Faribault, MN; John Sather, Fort Mohave, AZ; Jim (Joan) Shulind, Grand Forks, ND; and many grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband David E. Hanson, 1998, her son Stephen E. Hanson, 1969, her parents, and four brothers- Arthur W., Marvin T., Raymond L., and Louis W. Sather.

Services will be held on Friday, August 13, 2004, 10:30 am in Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile, MN.

Visitation will be on Thursday, August 12, 2004, from 5-7 pm with a prayer service at 6:30pm at the Erickson-Vik Funeral Home.

Internment will be at Concordia Cemetery, Fertile, MN.
