In a 1966 family history, Oby Bonawit wrote:

"Electa and Dan have spent all their lives near where they were born except for a year in Toledo after their marriage. Dan invested in oil wells in Scott Twp. which he pumped to earn a comfortable living. He was elected to membership on the school board, the Sun Grain Association, the local bank, and was a Justice of the Peace for several years."

Dan's obituary mentions that he was also a member of Woodmen of the World. Grandson Richard Bonawitt was the officiating clergy at his funeral.

Family members remember Dan for his dexterity in his wood/machine shop, even as his eyesight declined. One grand-niece called him an "inventor" and remembered being fascinated by a little merry-go-round that he had made.

Dan also enjoyed reciting poetry for his grandchildren; "Evangeline," by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, was chief among them.

Not all was quiet in the countryside, however. The 1974 Risingsun Centennial Book recounts how Dan's Ford V8 was stolen when a gas thief was frightened by a shot gun blast at a neighboring home. The thief abandoned his own car, ran to the Bonawit farm, took their car and drove it to Toledo where it was later found. Date: January, 1939.
