Civil War Veteran Taken by Death

Martin L. Alford, Civil War Veteran, and resident of Plains many years, passed away at his home Tuesday morning [Nov. 26] after a confining illness which has kept him in bed for the last 3 months. Mr. Alford was born in Yorkville [Kendall Co.], Ill. in 1846. He volunteered for service in the U.S. army in February 1865 and was a private in Co. A 16th Illinois Veteran Infantry and was honorably discharged at Louisville Kentucky in 1865 being married the following year.

Mr. Alford is survived by his widow and 4 sons, one of whom, C.L. [Charles Lee] Alford lives here, Alvero [Alva Clark] at Buxton, Ore., Oscar [Oscar Goodsell] of Porterville Calif., and Fred [Frederick Gordon] of Seattle and a younger brother who lives in Nacedah, Wis., a granddaughter Mrs. Stuart Stobie, who lives here. A daughter [Mamie Isabel] died several years ago.

The Alfords come to Montana 19 years ago, living on a ranch near Lonepine before coming to Plains 4 years ago.

Military funeral services were held Wednesday at the Methodist church and interment was made in the Plains cemetery.
