He was the son of Zerubabel-5 and Elizabeth (Swezey) Hallock, born in Old Aquebogue part of Southold.
Title of Captain: Did not come from the Revolution. He was known as Captain because he was a commissioned Captain of the militia in 1790 by Governor George Clinton.
Occupations: He was a shoe cobbler, served as a Captain in the State Militia after 1790, and, probably farmed as well.
He married Hannah Youngs, daughter of Daniel and Mary (Penny) Youngs, in about the year 1771 in Southold, Long Island (Pioneers of Riverhead). They had 10 children: Hannah, Elizabeth, Zachariah, Esther, Fanny, Harmony, John, Bethuel, Sarah, and Mary.
He was mentioned in his grandfather's will (Zerubabel - died 1761. "To my grandson, Zachariah Hallock, 10, and the rest to my six children, Zerubabel, James, Joseph, Benjamin, Esther, and Eunice. I make Samuel Landon, Esq., and my son Zerubabel executors."
REVOLUTIONARY WAR SERVICE "The Genealogical Records Committee, N.S.D.A.R., state that Zachariah Hallock, 1st, was a resident of Jamesport, Long Island, N.Y., during the Revolution. He enlisted March 25, 1776, with the First Regiment Minute Men of Col. Josiah Smith and Capt. Paul Reeves Co, Suffolk Co, Town of Southold, Long Island, New York. He was a signer of the Association in Suffolk Co June, July, and August, 1775, Brookhaven, LI, NY; a list of the Minute Company which enlisted themselves as volunteers out of Mattituck, Aquebogue and the westward company, March, 1776." ONE OF FIRST RIVERHEAD OFFICERS: The first town meeting (of Riverhead) was held in the Griffing home on April 3, 1792. The minutes of that first meeting record names of many of the early settlers:
"Then and there Was Chosen By a Majority of Votes the following persons as Officers for this town: Overseers of the Poor: Deacon Daniel Terry, Zachariah Hallock, ...."
