He was the King of Aragon from 1164 to his death 1196, replacing his regent mother, Petronilla, and his title went to his son. Peter.

Alfonso was known for the Treaty of Cazorla, and his involvement in the affairs of Languedoc would cost the life of his son, Peter II of Aragon. Alfonso II provided the first land grant to the Cistercian monks on the banks of the Ebro River in the Aragon region, which would become the site of the first Cistercian monastery in this region. He was a noted poet of his time and a close friend of King Richard the Lionheart, and was famous for his love affairs.

He died at Perpignan in 1196.
