Obituary
MR. SAMUEL S. LUCAS
Mr. Lucas was born in Giles County in 1851, when a very young man he joined the Christian Baptist and was baptized by Rev. J. L. Baber. He had held the office of Overseer of the Poor for many years. He did his best for the poor and in cases where county funds were unavailable he either helped the poor out of his own pocket or else reported them to those whom he knew to be charitably inclined. When his wife Mary went, he considered life empty and wished to go too. He kept nightly watch over her grave. He lingered there and in the two days and nights between her death and his serious illness, five times he had gone to the cemetery. On Sept. 5, his condition became alarming, then for a few days he seemed better. The end came unexpectedly but he was conscious to the last. On Sunday, Sept. 26, with Angel's Rest Lodge IOOF in charge, the funeral service was conducted in the Methodist church with interment in eastside Cemetery where his wife had been buried only three weeks before. Mr. and Mrs. Lucas are survived by the following children: Misses Mary, Lucille and Dewey Lucas and Messrs. Willie, Marvin, and Jesse Lucas.
