Lydia S. White
Birth: 13 SEP 1819 in Salisbury, Herkimer Co. New York 1
Death: 20 NOV 1853 in Salisbury, Herkimer Co. New York
Burial: NOV 1853 Salisbury Rural Cemetery, Herkimer Co., New York
Note:
Kate Sagendorph Mason has written, "Lydia (Lydia White Munson) died when the girls were very young, about 8 and 11 (actually 10 and 12, almost 13). Grandfather Munson moved to Charlotte, Michigan taking Aunt Ann (Angeline Munson) and the two girls (Mary Angeline and Augusta, also his mother, Lydia Haile Munson) with him. Aunt Ann cared for the girls until she married Col. Moore (his name was Lyman Mower) and went to Vermont to live. The two girls went back to NY to Fairfield Seminary and were cared for by Aunt Jenny Pratt." (Martha White Pratt, wife of Edwin Pratt)

"Other families from N.B. (Herkimer County - date supplied by EHLM from cemetery markings) - Charles Pratt (1842-1917), James Pratt ( -1896) , Lou Pratt Belcher, Emmet Denny. All of these related to Lydia White. I do not know whether her mother's maiden name was Pratt, but I think it must be that way. Emmet Denny's mother or grandmother was a White, but he was related to the Pratt's too. Etta Denny couldn't find out much about the family when last -"

E-mail sent by EHLM on 9/4/2003 to research people in Herkimer County:
Based on additional census research, construction of the Pratt family tree - made possible by the excellent Salisbury Rural Cemetery records, plus further analysis of some writings of my grandmother; my current best guess is that the parents of Lydia S. White (1819-1953), wife of Amos Hale Munson (1819-1886) were Lyman White of Fairfield and Lydia Pratt of Salisbury (daughter of Stephen Pratt, granddaughter of Nathaniel Pratt).

Zoe,

Thank you for all of your work. I am about 90% sure that Jonas was Lydia father and that he was born no later than 1780. That date rules out all of the Jonases showing up in NY in 1850. Her mother was also a Lydia and she died on June 8, 1863 in Mayfield, Fulton County, NY where she was living with her daughter, Lydia Jr.'s older sister, Abigail White Dennie, born April 21, 1801. Lydia Sr. is buried in the Riceville Cemetery in Mayfield. Jonas and Lydia S. had one other known offspring, Martha "Jenny" White, born May 12 1806, who married Edwin H. Pratt. Many of the clues that got me this far were from my grandmother's writings. The attached document is a compilation of my work and some of her comments. Some of it is a little out of date.

Other comments:

Lydia and Amos were married in Salisbury on Feb. 3, 1840.
I live in California, but was in Salisbury and the other nearby towns in the fall of 2002. I had an extensive viewing of the cemetery and have spent much time going over their extensive website.
The maiden name of Amos' second wife, Susan Cushing, was Searles.
There are no Whites listed on the Salisbury Rural Cemeteries nor in any of the other Salisbury cemeteries. I have looked elsewhere in the county with no luck, so far.
I appreciate your list of Munsons in the Salisbury Rural Cemetery. I already have all of them in my tree.

The remaining questions are:

What happened to Jonas after 1820?
Who were his parents?
What was Lydia Sr.'s maiden name.

Written by Susan Perkins of the Herkimer County Historical Society on January 7, 2000: "Lydia White may have been the daughter of Jonas White who lived in Salisbury according to the census of 1820. It shows that he did have a daughter of under the age of ten. He was the only White in the town of Salisbury at that time"

Jonas White family in 1820 Census:
Males: 3 under 10, one 19 to 26, one 45 & over
Females: one under 10, 3 10 to 16, one 45 & over.
Analysis: The two 45 and over would be Jonas & Lydia Sr. The one female under 10 woud be Lydia Jr. One of the females 10 to 16 would be Martha, born in 1806. Abigail would be 19 and was apparently no longer in this household. The 19 to 26 male and the other 10 to 16 female have not been identified.

Lyman White family in 1820 Census:
Male: one 16 to 26
Females: one under 10, one 16 to 26
Analysis: Lyman and his wife are much younger. The one female under 10 would be Lydia Jr. Martha and Abigail do not appear. Lyman is too young to have been a parent of Abigail and Martha.

One item on your web site about Lyman, written by James M. Hall:
"On the same side next came Lyman White who had several children, only one of whom, Dwight, was of an age to attend district school. White had been a hatter by trade, but the business having ended, he worked at whatever he could get to do. This house was said to be the first one built in the village."

Lyman appeared in Fairfield in every US Census from 1820 (the year after Lydia was born) through 1850. I haven't checked further. Amos and Lydia were married in 1840 when they were both 21. In the 1850 Census Lyman and his wife, Lydia, still had these children at home: Adeline 24, Augustus J. 20, and Dwight 9. Lyman was born in Connecticut and his wife in New York. If the senior Lydia was a Pratt, we can take her back two more generations and probably more. Does anyone know the origins of Lyman? It would be nice to put the White tree together, but none of them are buried in the Salisbury Rural Cemetery.

Another item of interest is that Stephen Pratt, presumed to be Lydia senior's father, had a son, Edwin who married a Martha White, whose father was James White. He could only be found in the 1810 Census. Would anyone know if James and Lyman are related?
