Real estate developer. Founder of Claremont County, Virginia.

The son of George & Catharine (Swartley) Mancha, in 1850 he was living in East Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He was presumably living in or near Lancaster County yet in 1860, although he is not found in that census.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Lancaster August 2, 1862, mustered into federal service there August 11 as a private with Co. E, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 15, 1863. He also enlisted in Lancaster June 29, 1863, during the Gettysburg crisis, and mustered into state service at Harrisburg date not stated as 1st sergeant of Co. C, 47th Pennsylvania Militia. Promoted to 1st lieutenant to date July 9, he honorably discharged with his company August 13, 1863.

He married Lillian Elizabeth lnu. and fathered Raymond (b. @1869) and Lulu Nettie (b. @1873, d. 08/01/75). [NOTE: Wife's name is Elizabeth in the 1870 census. She is assumed here to be Lillian, but that is not confirmed.] An active real estate agent, he had offices in Dover and Georgetown, Delaware, and Easton, Talbot County, Maryland. In 1870, he lived with his family in Caroline County, Maryland, but made a sizeable land purchase in Surry County, Virginia, and moved there. He founded the town of Claremont, owned and operated the Norfolk and Petersburg Steamboat Company, and printed the local newspaper. He died at his home there allegedly from bronchitis.
