Jim was a farmer in Mills County, Texas. Jim and Mary were very happily married, and living NE of Star, Texas, when Mary died giving birth to their child, who also died in childbirth. Jim was devistated, and took his young son, Jack and went to live with his sister, Mariah Duncan Miller and her husband, Sam Miller in Mills County. Jim worked on their farm, and spent weekends walking to visit relatives (of which there were many in Mills County) on the weekends, spending 1-3 days at a time with each. He walked everywhere he went.
