Funeral Thursday For James Abbott


Funeral services were held last Thursday for James Alfred Abbott of Hot Springs, South Dakota, former Madison area resident. The Rev. Neal Phipps officiated at the services at the Wesleyan Methodist Church and burial was in Emerick Cemetery near Madison, Nebraska.


Mr. Abbott died Tuesday in the Lutheran Hospital at Hot Springs, [S.D.] following a three month illness.


The son of Christopher and Jennie Abbott, he was born February 5, 1890, at Irving, Illinois. On December 15, 1912, he married Ethel Huddle of Meadow Grove. Three sons were born to this union. Mrs. [ Ethel ] Abbott died in 1920.

He later married Nettie Musser of Tilden, Nebraska. Survivors include his wife; 5 sons; Orville of Hay Springs, Nebraska, Otis of Miles City, Montana, Wilbur of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, Charles of Lance Creek, Wyoming and Robert of Upton, Wyoming; 1 daughter, Doris Abbott Hall of Upton, Wyoming; 18 grandchildren; 1 brother, Charles of San Jose, California, and 2 sisters, Mrs. Bessie Houchin of Munice, Kansas and Mrs. Grace Jordal of Oelrichs, South Dakota.


Mr. Abbott was employed by the state hi-way department until a short time before his death.


Pallbearers at the funeral were Kenneth Berg, Walton Grant, George Grant, Peter Rahde of Emerick and Martin McGill Jr. and Lawrence Huddle of Madison.
