J. H., age 38, enlisted in Confederate States Army on 7 April 1862 in Frelsburg, Colorado County, Texas. He was mustered as a Private in Company H, 17th Texas Infantry and then elected Corporal on June 7, 1862. He was promoted Sergeant before October 31, 1862; dropped as regimental musician on November 15, 1862. He was sick at hospital in Hempstead, Texas on 19 April 1865. He was paroled on 6 July 1865.

He died between 1889-1894.

Frelsburg, Tex., Feb. 18 - J. H. Doescher, an old citizen of this town, and who is well known in Galveston as connected with the flour mills, died here this morning of heart disease in his 68th year. (The Galveston Daily News, Galveston, Tex, Feb 21, 1894 -
