Sarah Phillips was the daughter of Palmer Philips, a farm laborer, and Sabra Stanton (probably of Native heritage from RI - my best guess). Sarah married Joseph Bates in 1856. Sarah was one of the few people in the Bates family who became a member of the Packerville Baptist Church. She was baptized and accepted as a member on March 6, 1864 (the only other Bates family member who became a member of the church was Fidella/Fidelia, the daughter of Elhanan and Mary, and she married Charles Pierce and moved away). However, all of Sarah's children did become members of the church.

Sarah's children with Joseph were 1) Jennie Mary who married Franklin Pierce Brown, 2) Arthur Winchester who married Philomena Larrivee Darby, and 3) Walter Joseph who married Mary Josephine Vaughan.

After Joseph's death, Sarah married Otis Conant in 1900 and they lived in Mansfield in Tolland County. Although Conant was a younger man, Sarah also outlived him. In the last years of her life she lived with her son Walter Joseph Bates in Rocky Hill, Connecticut where she died.
