Suggested edit: Elisha Arnold came to Peru in 1795 with all his worldly possession in a pocket-handkerchief and purchased said farm and 100 acres now owned by Seward Arnold. His name appears on the assessment roll of 1798, and a valuation of $1,269.00 on the Rogers
road the only passable good road in the town at the time, extending from Essex County over Halleck Hill through the Union and so on to the Saranac River. He became a man of wealth and influence and was the 1st Judge of Clinton county from 1819 to 1823. He and his son Silas at one time owned 1000 acres. There is a tradition that he discovered ore at Arnold Hill and that he bought the tract ostensibly for a sheep pasture. The mines
were a source of income for many years. After his decease, Silas Arnold and son Elisha removed to Keeseville where they died and, they left no successors to the once opulent and influential family.
