James Monroe Morgan was born to Charlotte Grey and David A. Morgan on March 1, 1874 in Arkansas.

James married Lexie Mae Tanner on July 16, 1899 in Weatherford, Texas. He and Lexie lived in and around Athens, Texas for the last 35 years prior to James death.

James was preceded in death by daughters Pearl (1900) and Lola (1908-1914). He was survived by his wife Lexie; daughters Arlevia Everett, Mae Everett and Margie Caraway; sons Elbert M. Morgan, Oscar C. Morgan and Robert J. Morgan; one sister Deelie Bynum of Houston and one half brother George Morgan of Athens; 14 grandchildren and great grandchildren. Burial was at Shelby Chapel. Pallbearers were I.W. Mosley, Lee Calhoun, Alfred Cates, Carnie Morgan, Henry Ritters and Marvin Moosberg.
