Albert Garnett Mitchell
Age, 81 died peacefully in his home on Friday, September 24, 2010, after a long battle with cancer. A native of Danville, Virginia, Albert was the son of the late Howard Taft Mitchell and Emma Saul Mitchell.
In 1946, Albert enlisted in the Navy and served on a destroyer until 1949. He later began a career at the DuPont Company in Seaford and Wilmington, Delaware, where he worked for 43 years. He was a member of the Schoolfield Baptist Church in Danville, Virginia. He was a freemason and served as Grand Master in 1968. "Bert", as he was known to his friends, touched many lives through his passion for bagpipes, traveling, and music. He touched many lives as a mentor and friend. He also passed on his love for bagpipe music to his sons, students, and friends.
Albert was the husband of Carole Rafferty Mitchell, father of Billy, and brother of William, all of whom are deceased. He is survived by his daughter, Debra Thompson and husband Robert of Chatham, Virginia; two sons, Robert and wife Dana of Shepherdstown, West Virginia, Burt and wife Kathy of Roanoke, Virginia; four granddaughters Jessica Broskie and husband Brad, Krista Schneider and husband Andy, Melissa and Lindsey Mitchell, one grandson Quillan Mitchell, and two great- grandchildren, Kamryn and Konnor Schneider.
The family will receive friends at McCrery Memorial Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, Delaware from 6-8 pm, on Thursday, September 30. Services will be held at the MCCRERY FUNERAL HOME at noon on Friday, October 1, where friends may call after 11 am. Interment will be at the Delaware Veterans Cemetery off Route 896, Bear, Delaware at 2 pm.
In lieu of flowers anyone wishing to make a contribution in Albert's memory is encouraged to donate to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 3300 East Sunrise Dr., Tucson, AZ 85718.
