Dorothy attended Marionville High School and was a graduate of St. John's School of Nursing where she received her nursing degree in 1946. During her 50 year nursing career she served as a private nurse through St. John's of Springfield, Mt. Vernon Chest Hospital, and was a home health nurse for St. John's Hospital. She retired in 1996 following a very rewarding nursing career.
She married Roy "Bud" Mercer, Jr. on Oct. 5, 1947. They moved to Monett in 1949 and owned and operated Mercer Funeral Home for 20 years. He preceded her in death on Dec. 7, 1974. She married Winford Louis Atwell on Oct. 21, 1979 and he preceded her in death on July 17, 1989. She was also preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
Dorothy was a member of Liberty United Methodist Church of Monett where she was a member of WMU. She was also a member of PEO Sisterhood Chapter KW, Ozark Christian Writers Guild, Missouri Artist Group, past member of Eastern Star, and a member of the Hawthorne Literary Club. She was a long-time art student of Geri Carey and wrote numerous original poems which were published in Quill. She was active in numerous community activities
Survivors include two sons: R. Sherman Mercer and his wife, Heidi, of Angleton, Texas; Gregg Mercer and his wife, Teresa, of Monett; two daughters: Winetta Netzela, of Waynesville and Lisa Craft and husband, Max, of Verona; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 3 at Lakin Funeral Home in Pierce City. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 4 at the funeral home. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery in Monett.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society or to Feed the Children.
Arrangements are under the care of Lakin Funeral Home in Pierce City.
