Leonard L. Gue enlisted as a Private in Company F, Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry, on June 20, 1861, at Adrian, Michigan, for 3 years of service, at age 26. His description at the time was Height 5'7". Complexion light, Eyes blue, Hair light. He was a blacksmith by trade. Leonard was wounded in action on June 27, 1862, at Gaines Mill, Virginia. After being shot in right thigh, he was captured and later exchanged, then sent to the hospital at Chester, Pennsylvania. Leonard returned to duty in September 1862 an was promoted to Corporal in the color guard in January of 1863. He was severely wounded in the left arm at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on July 2, 1863. Leonard was then sent to the hospital at Chester, Pennsylvania and on to the hospital at Germantown, Pennsylvania. Under General Orders No. 188, he was declared unfit for further field service and was transferred to the Invalid Corps at Washington, D.C., March 15, 1864. Leonard was discharged in Washington, D.C., on June 20, 1864, from Company C, Sixth Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps. He soon enlisted in Battery G, of the First Michigan Light Artillery, on September 5, 1864, at Pontiac, for one year of service. He was appointed Artificer on January 28, 1865. On August 6, 1865, Leonard was mustered out and honorably discharged at Jackson, Michigan, after having been wounded five times during the war. He resided in Burdell, Osceola County, Michigan, after the service.
