Mr. Charles L. Darby, age 79, of 307 McDonald St., Rome, died Thursday morning at a Rome health care facility.

Mr. Darby was born in Polk County, Jan. 11, 1923, son of the late James Lewis Darby and Sally Cline Darby and spent the most of his life in Rome, Floyd County. He is a Baptist by faith and a veteran of World War II and served in the United States Army. He was a member of the American Legion Post 5. He was the owner and operator of Darby Plumbing and Heating for many years.

He was preceded in death by one son, Darell Lewis Darby; one brother, James L. Darby; and two sisters, Adalee Darby and Rosalee Davis.

Survivors include his wife Annie Ruth Hovers to whom he was married May 8, 1948; one daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Robert Milam of Rome; one sister, Beatrice Phillips of Rome; a granddaughter Misti Milam of Rome; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday 2 p.m. in the Chapel of the Jennings Oaknoll Funeral Home with the Rev. Holland Thomas and J. Parnick Jennings Sr. officiating. Interment will follow at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Darby will lie in state at Jennings Oaknoll Chapel where the family will receive friends this evening from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. and at other hours may be contacted at the residence of their niece, Betty Jane Holliday at 16 Kenwood Drive, Rome.

Pallbearers include: Everett Lee Philips Jr., Steve Kuykendall, Anthony Adams, Tim McEver, Alien McEver and James Wade and they are asked to assemble at the funeral home at 1:30 p.m. Saturday before the funeral service.

Funeral services for Mr. Charles L. Darby are under the direction of Jennings Oaknoll Funeral Home, 2542 Shorter Ave., Rome 30165.
