Johnnie was a CSA Civil War Veteran, and a prisoner of war at Rock Island. He was part Indian and his wife, Mary Carter, was also part Indian. After the war, Johnnie brought his young family to Texas in a wagon, their daughter Joey just being old enough to ride a horse, or to help drive the wagon. They settled in Voca and Johnnie ran a store there, and stayed there the rest of their lives.
