Thelma Luthard, age 89, of Paynesville, Minnesota, died Friday, May 21, 2004, at the Koronis Manor in Paynesville.

The funeral service was held at 1:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Paynesville Lutheran Church with Revered Dave Nelson and Reverend Jeff Bergman officiating. Interment was held in the Nordland Lutheran Cemetery in Paynesville. Memorials are preferred.

Thelma Elaine (Aamodt) Luthard was born July 26, 1914, in Barton, North Dakota to Amund and Anna Aamodt. She was baptized and confirmed at Barton Lutheran Church. After high school in 1933 Thelma attended the Good Samaritan School of Nursing in Rugby, North Dakota, graduating in 1936. She worked as a nurse in Rugby; LaCrosse, Wisconsin; Abbott in Minneapolis; and Williston, North Dakota.

Thelma was married to Pastor Lynn Luthard on May 19, 1942, at Barton Lutheran Church. They lived in Fortuna, ND; Ada, MN; Clayton, WI; Thief River Falls, Hoffman and Paynesville; Williams, IA; and retired in Paynesville in 1979.

In many of these communities she worked in hospitals, nursing homes or private duty. Her last position was at the Koronis Manor Nursing Home in Paynesville from 1969 to 1974 . Her original uniform is in the Paynesville Historical Museum.

In church ministry Thelma assisted in home visits; entertained and boarded pastors, missionaries and college students; started a girls' club; taught Sunday school and Bible school; attended youth groups, circles and Lutheran Church Women; taught Bible studies; did secretarial work; and made 15 to 25 quilts every year for Lutheran World Relief. She was a member of the Good Samaritan Auxiliary, helping with hair care. Thelma became a resident at the Koronis Manor in March 2002.

Thelma is survived by her husband: Lynn of Paynesville; two daughters: Lois (Charles) Anderson of Moorhead; Twila (John) Edmunds of Plymouth; six grandchildren: Heidi Anderson, Jeremy (Krista) Moore, Stacy Anderson, Nicole Moore, Jessica Edmunds; and Samuel Edmunds; one great-grandson: Braden Moore; one step-brother: Ephraim Evavold of Rushford; one step-sister: Elvina (Leman) Smith of Fargo, ND; nieces; nephews; cousins; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter: Grace Moore Meske (August 3, 1993); two sisters: Agnes (Lyle) Peterson; and Amanda (Aurin) Peterson; three brothers: Tregve (Mildred) Aamodt; Helmer (Eleanor) Aamodt; Arthur (Alma) Aamodt; and three sisters-in-law: Evenelle (Arnold) Evavold; Lillian (Samuel) Saure; and Inez Evavold.

Arrangements were with the Johnson Funeral Home of Paynesville.
