William A. Gentz, age 89, a long time resident of Mount Clemens, Michigan and currently of Melbourne, Florida, passed away on Saturday, October 2, 2010 in Florida.

He was born October 9, 1920 in Mount Clemens, to the late Arthur and Neoma Finley Gentz. He would have celebrated his 90th birthday this Saturday.

On February 7, 1947 in Mount Clemens, Michigan he was united in marriage to the former Evelyn B. Kandt. She preceded her husband in death August 21, 2002.

Mr. Gentz graduated from Mt. Clemens High School - Class of 1938. He proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. After his return from the service he enrolled in Detroit College of Law and graduated from that college in 1951. He practiced law in the Mt. Clemens area from 1952 until 2007. He was a member of the Macomb County Bar Association where he served as past president in 1971, also a member of the Michigan Bar Association earning emeritus status in 2007. In 1958 he became accredited to present cases to the United States Supreme Court. During the 1950's he was an attorney for Clinton Township, Michigan and Chippewa Valley School District in the 1960's.

Besides his involvement with his profession, he was also active with his church and many local civic groups. He was a member of Zion United Church of Christ, Mt. Clemens where he served as past president of the church council in 1966. Bill was a lifetime member of the Old Crowd and was involved with the planning of their 100th anniversary, securing the Clydesdale Horses for this special event. A lifetime member of the Clinton River Boat Club, he could frequently be found enjoying Club Island on his 36 foot Chris Craft known as "Debby Dee," and fishing with the grandchildren. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 4 for over 50 years, the Mt. Clemens Masonic Lodge # 6 F. & A.M., was the entertainment director of the Hi-12 Club, and served as Westendorf Homeowners Association past president prior to his move to Melbourne, FL. He was currently serving on the nominations committee of the Fountains Retirement Committee in Florida and was responsible for coordinating their theatrical shows, where he could display his skills in public speaking, and drama. He was often complimented by his fellow residents at the Fountains for his karaoke performances - a pastime he truly enjoyed.

In addition to being a professional and a civic minded man, he also had a personal family side as well. One of his dreams was to play professional baseball. Having been a baseball hero at Mt. Clemens High School, he tried out for the Detroit Tigers, but duty called and he got drafted into the United States Army instead. His creative side was evident with his sculptures and drawings, prompting Bill to consider art school, but as destiny would direct his life, practicing law was where he would flourish. There are many family stories and fun times to be remembered, especially the traditional holiday meals; whether it was the Christmas Eve Prime Rib Dinner with Bill in the kitchen overseeing all the preparations, or their Easter Brunch. Family being together was so important to him. This Saturday, October 9, 2010 would have been his 90th Birthday Celebration, with all family and many friends traveling to Florida for the party. Again destiny would intercede, and this time the family would be together, but for a different celebration. This celebration would be for the memory of a life well lived, a man loyal to his family, active in his profession, assisting those who came to him for his expertise, and committed to civic involvement. As his family had explained, "He was a common man in a professional job."

He will be missed by his family, including two sons; William A. (Carolyn) Gentz of Clinton Twp., David A. Gentz of Mt. Clemens, daughter Debra (David) Theisen of Melbourne, nine grandchildren; Dennis Gentz, Jennifer (Matthew) Jaczkowski, Kelly (John) Widmer, Kristie (Dave Persyn) Gentz, David (Jennifer) Theisen, Jr., Jamie (John) VanderVeen, Jeffrey Gentz, Lindsey (Charles Schwartz) Theisen, Alisha Gentz, 5 great-grandchildren; Hailey Polizzi, Ariana Widmer, David Theisen III, Carter Widmer, Matthew Theisen, daughter-in-law Doris Gentz of Clinton Twp., numerous nieces and nephews, and his feline friend "Tigercat." In addition to his wife Evelyn, he was preceded in death by his son Gregory, sister Dorothy Pruce, and granddaughter Leslie Gentz.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 11, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Harold W. Vick Funeral Home, 140 South Main Street, Mt. Clemens with the Rev. Scott Davis, Pastor of Zion United Church of Christ officiating. Visitation will be held in the funeral home from 12 Noon until 8:00p.m. on both Saturday, October 9, 2010 and on Sunday, October 10, 2010. Burial with military honors will be in Clinton Grove Cemetery, Clinton Twp., MI.
