Melvin was born July 14, 1922, in Goshen, Idaho. He was the youngest of six children born to Hiram K. and Esther P. Hansen.
He graduated from Firth High School.
Melvin married Carma L. Millar in Dillon, Mont., on July 6, 1943. Soon after, he entered the U.S. military. Upon his return home from his military service, Melvin and Carma purchased a farm in the Goshen area where they raised their family. They had a dairy farm, and Melvin enjoyed working with the animals and raising his crops.
Upon retirement in 1986, Melvin and Carma bought a second home in Overton, Nev., where they spent the winters. They made many friends there and enjoyed their time together. Carma passed away Aug. 13, 1998.
Melvin is survived by three sons and two daughters, Richard (Kelly), Barbara Wallis, Gary (Vivian), Kevin (Monica) and Kimberley (Kenneth) Dela Vega; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carma; son, Paul; and his brothers and sisters, Rodney, Cleora, Ruel, Afton and Opal.
