Cayce Gene "Joe" Bagby, 63, passed from this world into his home with Jesus Christ October 2, 2010 at Hendrick Hospice, Abilene TX, 9 weeks after being diagnosed with a brain tumor. Joe was born in San Angelo TX, August 29, 1947.
Joe grew up in Eden TX. Being a talented tennis player in high school, he attended Howard County Junior College on a tennis scholarship and graduated from North Texas State with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education (Gymnastics) and a minor in Speech and Debate. Answering Uncle Sam's call, he served in the army as a medic during the Vietnam era from 1969-71 in Germany.
1n 1972, Joe met the love of his life, Paula Bernard, in Austin TX. They were married at the University Church of Christ there in Austin on April 14, 1973. The couple moved to Lubbock to attend Sunset School of Preaching and Missions in 1978, eventually graduating with degrees in both Bible and Foreign Missions.
They left for Thailand in the summer of 1981, where they served as missionaries for eight years. There, God blessed them beyond what they could ask or imagine with Thai twin daughters, whom they adopted at one year old, Hope and Joy.
Upon returning to the United States in the fall of 1988, Joe served as the pulpit minister for the Arnold Church of Christ in Annapolis MD until 1991.
From 1991 until 1997 Joe served as pulpit minister for the Westside Church of Christ in Round Rock TX.
In the fall of 1997, Joe and Paula moved their family to Sweetwater TX, where Joe began serving as the pulpit minister with the Fourth and Elm Church of Christ. While living in Sweetwater, Joe received his Masters Degree in Congregational Ministry from Abilene Christian University. Joe called these years in Sweetwater "the most wonderful, fruitful, loving years of my life."
Joe loved to play tennis and golf. He was a marathon runner, enjoyed jogging, and regularly worked out at the gym. Being outdoors with nature gave him relaxation and peace. He cherished time spent with his wife, daughters and three grandchildren, Kylie, Madison and Joshua Cayce, taking them on many vacations and adventures. But most of all, Joe loved to study and teach the Bible. He loved his congregation and loved serving them in every way, and they loved him back. Joe was a people lover and invested his life in others.
Joe is survived by his wife of 37 years, Paula Bernard Bagby, of Sweetwater TX, twin daughters, Joy Sembrick and her husband, Brandon, of Sweetwater, Hope Schitoskey and her husband, Jason, of Sweetwater TX, a sister, Nancy Collins and her husband, Bill, of Soso MS, three grandchildren, Kylie, Madison and Joshua, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cayce and Imogene Bagby.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by McCoy Funeral Home (325.235.8666), Sweetwater TX. Friends will be received at the Fourth and Elm Church of Christ, Monday evening from 6 until 8 in the sanctuary, the place we remember Joe best. The funeral will be at the Fourth and Elm Church of Christ, October 5 at 3:00 PM. Burial will be at the Garden of Memories on I-20 outside of Sweetwater. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Joe Bagby Memorial Education Fund at the Fourth and Elm Church of Christ. PO Box 917, Sweetwater TX 79556.
