Epsom - Robert E. Backus, 73, of Granny Howe Road, died yesterday at the
Veterans Administration Hospital in Manchester after a long illness.

Born in Moretown, VT., he was an Epsom resident for most of his life.

Before retiring, he was employed as a heavy equipment operator with
the State of N.H. Highway Department for many years.

He was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the American
Legion and the VFW Post of Epsom. He was a member of the Corinthian Masonic
Lodge of Pittsfield and the Loyal Order of Moose of Concord.

He leaves his wife, Jane (Palmer) Backus, a son, Robert O. Backus of Epsom; three
daughters, Barbara A. McJuary of Penacook, Aldora Mitchell of Andover, and
Susan Warriner of Concord; 11 grandchildren; a sister Sal Baker of Mount Dora, Fla.;
nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11a.m. in the chapel of the Waters Funeral
Home. The Rev. Franklin Parker, of Epsom, will officiate. Burial will be at the South
Duxbury Cemetery, in Duxbury, Vt. Calling hours are Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and
7 to 9 p.m. at the Waters Funeral Home, 50 S. Main St, Concord.

Donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, in care of
Luella Myers, 227 Pleasant St., Concord 03301.
