Revolutionary War soldier
Sgt. John Gilbert served in the War of the Revolution under Colonel Isaac Sherman's 8th Regiment of Connecticut. He enlisted May 28, 1777 at age seventeen and served for the duration of the war. His rank: from May 28, 1777 to January 1, 1780 as private; from January 1, 1780 to January 1, 1781 as corporal; and from January 1, 1781 to December 31, 1781 as sergeant. He was allowed a pension resulting from injuries sustained while in service, but details on type of injury are unknown because records were destroyed in a fire at the War Office in 1800. Two letters from Pierre Van Cortlandt in support of John Gilbert's pension state that he was well acquainted with John and Elizabeth, and that after the war, John was the procurer of his estate and farm on the Upper Manor House in VanCortlandtville, N.Y.
John's parents were Ebenezer Gilbert (1724-1787) and Prudence Burr (1731-1765) both of Fairfield, Conn. John married Elizabeth Lyon on November 11, 1783. Elizabeth was born January 18, 1763 in Greenwich, Conn. and died November 07, 1841 in VanCortlandtville, N.Y.
