"Elbert Scouten, 93, of Centerville RD 2, formerly of Spartansburg, died Thursday afternoon at Hamot Medical Center, Erie. He was born March 31, 1892, in Sparta Township, a son of the late Elbert and Nellie Sherlock Scouten. Mr Scouten was raised and educated in Spartansburg. As a young man, he bought a dairy farm in Britton Run in Sparta Township and operated the farm until his retirement at the age of 74. He moved to Spartansburg in 1970. Throughout his life, he held an avid interest in hunting. He attended the Spartansburg Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. He was a member of the Sparta Grange. Mr Scouten is survived by two sons, Gerald Scouten of Centerville RD 2, and Elbert Scouten Jr of Tucson, AZ; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and one sister, Mrs Jenny Smith of Guys Mills. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Blakeslee Scouten, in 1980; one son, William Scouten; three brothers, Arthur, Clair, and Paul Scouten; and one sister, Edith Davis. Friends may call at the Bracken Funeral Home in Spartansburg today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm, and attend the funeral service there on Sunday at 2pm with Rev Norwood B Futrell, pastor of the Spartansburg Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, officiating. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Spartansburg. Memorial contributions may be made to the Spartansburg Christian and Missionary Alliance Church."
