Alfred was one of 4 children born to Effie Edwinna (Bishop) and Alexander Muir, Jr. of Portland, Oregon. He was a highly respected industrial teacher at Woodstock and Albina schools for four years. He was particularly adapted to his profession on account of early training received with his father, a well-known local contractor. He married Mary Murray in 1915. They were both hospitalized at the Good Samaritan Hospital with the Spanish influenza in January 1919. Mary survived but he did not. He was 26 years old. The couple had no children. He was preceded in death by his mother Effie in 1901. He was survived by his wife, father and stepmother, Kate (Gibbs) Muir, brother William, who recently returned after service in France with the United States Marines, and sisters Myrtle and Estelle Muir.
