Mastin "Milton" Burks was my great-grandfather. There is no known photograph of him. He was the second son of John "Brinkley" Burks and 1. Temperence "Tempy" Evans, of China Grove, Pike Co., Alabama, formerly of Newton Co., Georgia. Milton married Martha Jane Sanders, daughter of Francis E. Sanders and Barbara Oswalt, on Sept. 6, 1855 in Pike Co. Soon after their marriage, they left Alabama and went to Tyler, Smith Co., Texas for several years and then settled in Oakland, Van Zandt Co., Texas, which is now Oakland Road in Canton, Texas. Their children were Margaret Ann (Jones, Hudson), Mastin Milton Jr., William Thomas, James Andrew, Mary Jane (Stephens), Fannie Delia (Lee) and *George Robert Burks. Milton was a big and heavy man, almost 7 feet tall; he was a farmer and was one of the three largest landowners in Oakland. He gave an acre of his 680 acres of land to be used for Oakland Cemetery. His siblings were Joel W., William Pulaski, Martha Elizabeth (Rushton), Temperence (Wilson), Margaret (Wilson), Mary, James Brinkley, Frederick, Susan (Curtis)and Jemima Burks (Sims).
