Van attended Taft School and then Yale University, graduating in 1944. He played varsity football at Taft and became a champion heavyweight boxer at Yale. At both schools he excelled academically. Dr. Midgley received his medical degree from Columbia P & S and practiced in the U.S. Army at Bellvue and Lenox Hill Hospitals in New York City, at White Plains and Grasslands Hospitals in Westchester County, New York and then in the Vero Beach, Florida area. He was a dedicated physician who touched numerous lives. Many people survived as a result of his skill as a surgeon.

Dr. Midgley was an accomplished fisherman and musician. His athletic passion was golf. He became a true student of the game. He understood the golf swing as well as most professionals. His golf buddies will miss his knowledge and company. Dr. Midgley made many devoted and loyal friends through the years. Many of these friends selflessly helped care for him towards the end. His family wishes to thank all of them for their devotion.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Dr. Michaela Scott and Dr. George Duvall, Dr. Richard and Faye Skripak and David and Sharon Marable. When Van's health began to deteriorate they devoted much of their time to him because he was their friend. The family cannot thank them enough for their love and caring.
