Son of James "Jim" F. Wells and Louisa Poteet. John Charles Wells married Martha Jane Blanton on 14 Jul 1904 in Wise County, Virginia. Together they had 7 children: Mr. Roy E. Wells, Mr. Casy Ray Wells, Estella Beatrice Wells, Pauline Ruth Wells, Mr. Ralph J. Wells, Marie Wells, and Louise Wells.

Crit Wells worked for the railroad as a fireman and later an engineer.
