Donald Frank Gowen, age 54 years,
died in an Ashville hospital after a long illness.
He was an expert gun repairman and collector; he was the owner and operator of the 'Gun Re-Blu Company for 18 years. He once said that guns were a hobby but that he was forced into business because he could not stand to see a pistol or rifle that was not absolute perfection. He did fine engraving and carving on the gun handles and specialized in the Colt .45 Frontier single action revolver.
He said that his firm in Ashville was America's original gun bluing house and he had developed a formula for a bluing material which he kept a closely guarded secret. His major customer was a firm in the Philippine Islands. His work took him to many places, including Alaska, Germany, and, Belgium.
He was an expert exhibition target shot.
His collection and equipment was once valued at least at $10,000.00
He was affectionately known as 'Uncle Don
of the Mountains'; Governors were among his fiends.
He was a member of the Elks Club; past Grand Master of the Odd Fellows of Florida; member of I.O.O.F. #412 of Ashville.
Interment in Myrtle Hill Cemetery at Tampa.
