After learning the local end of his father's mercantile business, Edward & his brother William left St. Louis to learn the Mexican end of the Santa Fe & Chihuahua trade. In 1846, he became involved in the Mexican War while on his annual spring trek. He & his brother were pressed into military service by Alexander W. Doniphan & his First Missouri Volunteers. When the troops moved on, Edward & his brother remained to try to negotiate with local officials on their own. They were detained, but not arrested, for almost a year until Sterling Price's Second Missouri Volunteers arrived in the spring of 1848. The Glasgow brothers returned to the United States soon after that, neither ever returning to Mexico. They jointly operated a wholesale grocery business in St. Louis for more than 20 years, providing supplies for the Southwest trade. Edward later served as president of several banks.
