Joseph was born in Chagrin Twp., Cuyahoga Co., Ohio, where he and his family lived until about 1827. The family moved to Crawford Co., Ohio around 1827, where Joseph was raised, married, and began a family of his own.

1) Sarah Walkup, m. Apr. 19, 1846; Crawford Co., OH 1846 OH Marriage
Children: Daniel, William, and Martha
2) Rachel Clutter, m. Mar 4, 1858 Marion Co., OH 1858 OH Marriage
Child: Clara/Clarissa Merriss; Note: Records indicate that Clara/Clarissa was not raised in Joseph's household, but in the household of her maternal grandparents, William Clutter and family.
3) Rebecca Locke, m. Nov 6, 1859, Van Wert Co., OH 1859 OH Marriage
Children: John B., Elmer E., Emily, and Sarah

Information received from Dennis Fabian, a Find A Grave Contributor, who got information from a Clutter family historian, Kensel Clutter, Joseph and Rachel had a baby in Dec. 1858, Clara, in Van Wert OH. Rachel died 2 days later. Unable to care for the child, Joseph took the baby back to Rachel's mother in Marion County to raise the child.

At the time this happened, Joseph had 3 children from his 1st wife Sarah. Almost a year after the death of Rachel, Joseph married his 3rd wife Rebecca and they had a child in 1860, there in Van Wert, and another in 1862 and 1864. The Civil War happened and Joseph's story continues below

Military Service:
Joseph enlisted in the Union Army on two occasions during the Civil War, first as a "100 day man", then enlisted for 3 years. His service was with Company E 64th Regiment, Ohio Infantry and also with Company I 139th Regiment, Ohio Infantry. Two years after the Civil War ended, Joseph moved his family to Kansas, settling first in Miami Co. KS. In 1882 and 1888 Joseph applied for, and received a pension for his service in the Civil War.

Land Ownership:
Aug 30 1876 deeded 160 acres in Harvey Co., Kansas for land that he homesteaded.
