MANTUA – Steven Frank Sara passed away Wednesday evening, October 6, 2010. He died peacefully in his home in Mantua, Utah, after a long valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 79.

Steven was born May 20, 1931, to Salvatore Sara and Concetta Presti Sara, in Astoria, Long Island City, New York.

As a young man, Steve loved to play fast pitch softball. At 17 years old he enlisted in the Air Force where he became an aircraft mechanic. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in Japan and Korea in 1952.

He married the love of his life, Carol Jean Hubbard, May 29, 1953 in Corinne, Utah. The marriage was solemnized later that year in December in the Logan Utah Temple. They are the loving parents of five children: Kathy, Steven, Debbie, Sherrie and Maryanne.

Steve received a BS degree in mechanical engineering from Utah State University. He worked as an aircraft mechanic, a production control specialist and a mechanical engineer for the Air Force at Hill Field for 20 years.

In 1975 he transferred to the Navy and completed his government service as a Director of the Navy Technical Representative office at Thiokol Corporation for 13 years, working on the C-3, C-4, and D-5 missile systems.

He was an active member of the LDS church, serving a one year mission with his wife in the California Riverside Mission, served a two year Stake mission, was in the Bishopric, Stake and Ward YM organizations, and served for over 15 years in the name extraction program.

He loved playing golf with his wife as well as time spent square dancing, until back problems caused him to discontinue these two activities.
Steve loved to have family activities, especially during the 4th of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas. He and Carol had the family tradition of all the family to their home for Conference Sundays.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a sister Anna, a brother Angelo and son-in-law, Paul Hansen.

His surviving siblings are Mary (Vito) Palazzolo, of Clarkston, Utah; Domenica Anne (Mario) Fischetto, of New York; and Anthony and Anna Sara, of Paradise, Utah.

Steve is survived by his wife, Carol, and their children and spouses: Kathy and Jessie Gifford, of Brigham City; Steven and Jan Sara, of South Jordan; Debbie and Wallace Bowen, of North Logan; Sherrie and Tom Davis, of Inkom, Idaho; and Maryanne and Curtis Butterfield, of Riverton.

Steve and Carol are grandparents to 24 and great-grandparents to 17 and now he will be there to lovingly send those little ones to our family.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 9, 2010 at 11:00 at the Mantua LDS Chapel, 237 S. Willard Peak Rd, Mantua.
Friends may call on Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Myers Mortuary, 205 S. 100 E., Brigham City and Saturday from 10:00 to 10:40 a.m. at the Church. Interment will be in the Mantua Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank Love Hospice for their long and loving care, especially Heather, Anna, April and Curtis. We also wish to thank our dear mother for her love and constant, patient care for Dad. Her example of faith courage and love has taught us much.
