BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Francis "Frank" John Channing was born to George Channing and Eliza Jane (Oliver) Channing on November 8, 1878 and was the 3rd of 6 children born to his parents. His birth place is said to be "Lake Gulch" which is a lake that is now in Douglas County, Colorado, but family history places it as being located in Gilpin County at the time. There may have been a mining town by that name.

Frank's father was a laborer from Curry Mallet, Somerset, England. His mother was the daughter of a Weslyan Reform Minister from Cornwall. They are buried in Fairmount Cemetery in Colorado.

Frank was a gold miner and gold mine ‘promoter' whose comings and goings were occasionally remarked upon in various newspapers in California, Nevada and Colorado. Family legend holds that he made and lost two Million-dollar fortunes in his lifetime, and that he died poor. A tough mining man, he was rough around the edges and had a somewhat stern and unsympathetic character.

On July 31, 1907 he married Bertha Lewis in Goldfield, Esmeralda County, Nevada. Bertha was the daughter of David Price Lewis, a blacksmith from Ohio whose father was Welsh, and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Jane Davies, an Ohio woman whose parents were also from Wales.

Frank and Bertha spent several years in Esmeralda County, Nevada. Their first child, Emzaella Mabel Channing, was born in Rawhide Precinct in early 1909. Their second daughter, Frances Nevada Channing, was born in Goldfield in October, 1910.

The family was early hit with tragedy when little Frances was only 8 months old. Her mother, Bertha, died from an ectopic pregnancy in Oakland, California on June 21, 1911. Unable to care for two toddlers in the gold fields, Frank shuttled them off to live with relatives in Denver, Colorado while he pursued his dreams of gold.

Sometime in 1924 or 1923, Frank was hospitalized for some ailment in Winnemuca, NV. His nurse was Catherine A. Sproul, a native of Boston, MA and the spinster daughter of Edward B. and Mary E. Sproul. She was a heavy-set woman of Irish ethnicity, with black hair, very fair skin and blue eyes. After his release from the hospital, he returned to Colorado and she began writing him letters, but he didn't open any of them. Meanwhile, she made plans to visit "a friend" in Colorado and also visit Frank. Just a few days before her arrival, he happened to open her letters.

Catherine's background was somewhat more refined than Frank's. The outhouse was a revelation, especially in freezing mountain temperatures in winter. Despite the hardships, Catherine stayed in Denver and, on January 11, 1925, Frank married her in Gilpin County, Colorado. Shortly thereafter, Frank moved the entire family to the gold mining town of Randsberg, California where Catherine ran the Rand Hotel, utilizing the labor of Frank's two teenage daughters.

In about 1927, Frank's eldest daughter, Emzaella, followed Catherine's example and went to Colorado to attend nursing school.

In 1930, we find Frank and Catherine living in Fallon Township, Churchill County, Nevada, but Frank's daughter, Frances, is living with his sister Mabel E. (Channing) Ziege in Central City, Gilpin County, Colorado.

In about 1932 daughter Emzaella married her beau, "Jack" Laird, who had also been a miner in Randsberg. In 1933, his other daughter, Frances, married James Day in San Louis Obispo.

Six years later, Frank's wife, Catherine, died in Cripple Creek, Teller County, Colorado. She was Irish Catholic and her death, birth and burial were recorded in St. Peter's Catholic Church in Cripple Creek. She was also buried in Riverside Cemetery.

On May 8, 1941, Frank died in Placer County, California, probably in Auburn, where his widowed daughter Emzaella was living.
