John C. Payne, 84, died at noon on Tuesday, April 8, at his home in Mt.
Vernon. He was born and reared in Rockcastle County and spent all of his life here. He had been in ill health for the past year. Mr. Payne was married to Mary J. Keller and to this union was born twelve children, eight of whom preceded him in death. Mrs. Payne died in October 1949. He was later married to Lucy King, who survives him. Other survivors include three sons, Henry and Ed, Mt. Vernon; and George, Cyprus, Calif., one daughter Mrs. Julia Hart of Mt. Vernon; one brother, A. L. Payne of Brodhead. He also leaves 34 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday and interment will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery. Cox Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
