98th National Guard New York 1864
Mr. Abbott was for many years surgeon of the 67th regiment, NY Infantry, and went out with that regiment in June 1863. In the following year, he became colonel of the 98th regiment, which he enlisted and organized in about sixty days. He was a physician and surgeon and lived at Hamburg, NY.

From 1911 Buffalo Morning Express:
"Colonel George Abbott. A life which had been intimately connected with much of the early history of Erie County came to an end with the death of Colonel George Abbott, M.D. of Hamburg, on March 26th. He was born at Palmyra, N. Y., on November 2, 1826. Graduated from the University of Buffalo in 1852, he served as resident physician in the Hospital of the Sisters of Charity throughout the cholera epidemic of that year. He moved to Hamburg in 1853, and for half a century was in the active and successful practice of his profession. During epidemics of diphtheria in Western New York in 1867 and 1880 he was considered an authority on the treatment of the disease, and the London Lancet published an article from him on the subject. The profession honored him by electing him president of the Erie County Medical Society and in 1876 he was elected a permanent member of the New York Medical Society. During the Civil War he raised the 98th Regiment of New York volunteers and was commissioned its colonel. He was deeply interested in educational matters and for years was president of the Hamburg school board. He was a Mason and a past master of Zion Lodge, East Hamburg. Surviving Dr. Abbott are a widow, a son, George Burwell Abbot of Hamburg, and a daughter, Mrs. Peter Thompson of Spencerport, N. Y. Colonel Abbott's courtliness of manner was proverbial."
