Born in Lavelsloh, Germany. Southeast of Bremen. Son of Friedrich Wilhelm Barg and Katarina Margarete Dunkhorst.

Immigrated in 1864. Probably came to America with his older brother, Christian Ludwig Barg (interred in Green-Wood), who had been to America, returned to Germany, got married, had children, and then decided to return to America.

Wilhelm was "well known" as a grocer according to the Brooklyn Daily Eagle newspaper.

His obituary notes he started in business as a grocer at Court and Carroll streets, continuing there until he retired in 1903.

Census and city directory records show various addresses. But all are in that neighborhood: 375 Court St, across the street at 388 Court St and 206 Flatbush Ave.

He was one of the original trustees and founders of the Germany Evangelical Lutheran Trinity Church of South Brooklyn (incorporated: Sept 27, 1887).

His obituary states that he was the personal friend of Brooklyn mayor Charles Adolph Schieren, Brooklyn Borough President Alfred E. Steers, and Congressmen William Calder and James S. T. Stranahan.

He and his wife Maria Caroline Schmidt had 9 children (1 died young):

Wilhelm August "William" Barg 1876-1909
Louis Ferdinand Barg 1878-1952
Charles Henry Barg 1879-1936
Edward Charles "Eddie" Barg b. 1884
August Charles "Gus" Barg 1888-1943
Otto William Barg 1891-1974
Amelia Catherine Barg a892-1893
Leo William Barg 1894-1938
Marion L [Barg] Benneke b. 1898

Most of the children stayed in or near Brooklyn. The oldest -- Wm August -- went to Kanasas. And August Charles moved to Chicago.

Here is a brief history about William's three brothers who also came to the US:

Christian "Louis" Ludewig probably was the first sibling to come to the US (in 1860) but returned to Germany, where he married Catharina Boesche. The couple had five children there (one died young). They all came to the US in 1880. Soon thereafter, Catharina gave birth to a child who was probably still born. By 1881, she grew homesick and returned to Germany, taking one daughter with her. Catherine died a few years later and that daughter came back to the US on her own at age 15.

Carl "Gus" August Barg came to the US in 1866 at the age of 17 to avoid being drafted by the German army. Instead he joined the US Navy and served seven years. He returned to Germany and brought his (widowed?) mother, Katarina Margarethe [Dunkhorst] Barg back with him. They lived with Carl's brother, Wilhelm, and Carl worked in Wilhelm's grocery store. In 1883 he was the first Barg to move to Kansas where he homesteaded a 360 acre farm. He married Catherine Frosch. The couple had four children. The mother of these four brothers, Katarina, moved to Kansas. She is buried in Carl August Barg's plot.

Carl "Charlie" Dietrich was the last of the four brothers to come to the US. He arrived between 1875-1880 (possibly coming with his brother, Christian "Louis" Ludewig). In 1880, he was living with his brothers Louis and Gus as well as with their mother Katarina. All three young men were grocers, probably working for William and/or for their brother-in-law, Heinrich Wilhelm Mohrmann. Charles married Catherine Louise [Heath]. The couple had five children.
