from a FAG member:
Son of Joseph Spencer May & Mary Ann Chambers

John's mother died shortly after his birth. By 1862, his father Joseph married
Lydia Schuler and enlisted as a soldier during the Civil War. According to the
1870 census, John was living with his grandparents, Patrick and Catherine May,
in Harrison, Ross Co., Ohio. By 1880, his family was living in Putnam County,
Ohio, although he was not living with them during that time. It is likely that
he resided in Wisconsin where he met and eventually married Harriet Durfee.
