Alex was the son of Reuben & Charlotte (Boone) Mayfield.
In 1862, during the Civil War, A. C. joined the 9th Indiana Legion (Union), for a term of 30 days. Word had been received that the Confederate Gen. John Hunt Morgan, the "Raider", was going to be coming through IN with his troops, and A. C. and others joined up for this temporary service to keep watch for
Gen. Morgan and his men. They never saw them.
A. C. and his family arrived in Washington Territory, from
Indiana, in March of 1884. They started the Mayfield Store, on the banks of the Nooksack, in Ferndale. The family lived above the store. On the evening of 21 Sep 1885, A. C. headed down the stairs on the outside of the building, to milk the cow, and was shot and instantly killed, by John Guildy. Guildy, pursued by a posse, was eventually shot and killed.
