Althea was born to Haldor and Margit (Brekke) Boen in Ottertail County, Minnesota in 1884. Her father was a prominent Editor and politician, She graduated from Moorhead Normal School in 1904 and taught in Browns Valley and Stephen, Minnesota. She married Charles Ira Walls and she and her husband moved from Idaho to North Dakota in 1911. Althea taught in Washburn, North Dakota from 1921-1935. She then worked as an assistant postmaster. Later she became a caseworker for the Federal Emergency Relief Administration in Sheridan County, moving to the McLean County Welfare office in Washburn the next year where she was employed until her retirement in 1958. The last fifteen years she worked as director of the office. Althea took deep pride in her affiliation with the Washburn Chapter of Order of Eastern Star, in which she held various offices through the years. Two other sources of great satisfaction for her were the host of former students, who maintained contact with her, and the many deserving people she was instrumental in aiding through her welfare office employment. In 1959, she received the TOPS (Time of Publice Service) Award of the North Dakota Conference of Social Welfare "in loyalty to duty and a persistent sense of obligation to others." Althea and Charles had two sons, Robert and Frederic. Charles died in 1961, and Althea moved to Corvallis Oregon in 1963, and lived there until her death in 1972 at the age of 87.
As recorded from the McLean County Heritage book.
