PAXTON – Senior Master Sgt. David F. Harms, ret., 73, of Paxton, died at 2:30 p.m. Monday, May 6, 2013, at his home.

David was born Sept. 3, 1939, in Rock Falls, the son of Carl W. and Josephine Gladys (Aldrich) Harms. He attended Sterling High School. He married Jean Peters on April 25, 1969, at American Lutheran Church in Rantoul.

He served in the Air Force from 1961 to 1982. He completed a tour of duty in Vietnam. After 21 years of service, he retired as a senior master sergeant. He then worked as a contract food service manager at Chanute Air Force Base for 10 years. After his military career, he and his family moved to Paxton.

David was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Melvin and the Rantoul AMVETS Club. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, cooking, reading, and puzzles. He was a Green Bay Packers fan.

Survivors include his wife of Paxton; three daughters, Donna (Wayne) Carroll of Mount Vernon, Ind., Donna (Michael) Harms Flath of Sullivan, Wis., and Brenda Harms Frichtl of Paxton; one son, Matthew (Tondia) Harms of Paxton; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joy Holland of Albuquerque, N.M., and Natalia (Loren) Freed of Sterling; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, four sisters, and one brother.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Baier Family Funeral Services, 406 E. Pells St., Paxton. Visitation also will be from 10:30 to 11 a.m. and the funeral at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 100 E. Third St., Melvin, with the Rev. John Brennen officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Beckman Cemetery in rural Rantoul.

Memorials may be made to St. Peter Lutheran Church in Melvin, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or a charity of the donor's choice.
