The Pulaski (TN) Citizen, Mar, 1957

Word has been received here of the death Thursday (March 21, 1957) morning, of Mrs. Shields Abernathy at her home in Memphis. Funeral services will be held Friday at St. John's Episcopal Church in Memphis with burial there.

Mrs. Abernathy is survived by her husband, Dr. Shields Abernathy, a native of Pulaski; one son, Lane Abernathy, New York City; one daughter, Mrs. Thurman Crawford, Memphis; and five grandchildren.

Mrs. Helen Salsbury Abernathy, wife of a prominent Memphis surgeon and cancer specialist, died about 8 AM yesterday at her home at 350 South Highland. She was 61. Burial in Elmwood Cemetery.

She was born in Grand Rapids, MI and came to Memphis a number of years ago. She was a member of St. John's Church, Tuesday Study Club, Fortnightly Club and Les Passe, a woman's philanthropic group.

She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Eleanor Abernathy Crawford of Memphis and a son, Lane Abernathy of New York.
