James Madison Proffitt, Jr., my great grandfather, was a lock keeper on the James River and Kanawha Canal. He became the lock keeper some time after the railroad bought the canal right-of-way. James Proffitt remained the lock keeper in Lynchburg VA until his death because of the location of the city water supply dam and an agreement between the city and the railroad. Some people called him "Matt" Proffitt, and even one city directory referred to him that way.

Obituary in the Richmond Times Dispatch:
"JAMES M. PROFFITT

James Madison Proffitt, 76, who had been in charge of the Chesapeake & Ohio dam on the James River here for 36 years, died at 6:50 o'clock this morning. He survived his wife 18 years. Mr. Proffitt is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Helen [sic] Boutchyard and Mrs. P.R. Burks of Lynchburg; and a son, James O.[sic] Proffitt, Lynchburg."
