Dr E.P, Holloway, or Ed Holloway, as he was so familiarly known, was the elder son of the late Mr.Thomas L.Holloway, and was born in Greene township, this county, in 1844.
Ed lived on the farm with his father and attended school until he was 18 years old, when he enlisted with about one hundred other young men of South Bend and vicinity, with the 21st Indiana Battery. He served in this organization for three years, being mustered out with it at the close of the war. He was one of the best of soldiers, always performing his duties uncomplainingly. He passed through all of the engagements, in which the battery participated unscathed, but once he was brought near death's door and only the careful nursing by his comrades saved him. One act of his while in service is worthy of mention here, as it put a stop to card playing in the battery. He made a lathe out of such rough materials as could be gathered in the camp and with it turned sets of chess men out of red and white cedar, until every section of the battery had several sets, and nearly every one of it's 110 men became expert chess players. The idea was suggested to him by seeing Gen.Crook constantly playing chess, his passion for the game being so great that he kept it up while his brigade was skirmishing.
Soon after Ed Holloway returned from the army he entered the drug store of Reed & Coonley with the intension of becoming a druggist. He afterward became a member of the firm
Smith & Holloway booksellers and stationers, in this city. In 1875 he retired from the firm and learned the profession of Dentistry, which he followed in Sturgis for several years, and then in this city up to the time of his last illness.
Dr. Holloway married a most estimable lady in Michigan, fifteen years ago, who survives him, together with his brother, John Holloway, and his sisters Mrs.Allie Reece, Mrs. Willis Warner, Mrs. Will Miller and Miss Kittie Holloway. He was one of the tenderest and loving of husbands, for whose bereaved wife there is most sincere sympathy.
